This gallery quality Photograph is of one of the many breathtaking views in the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Taken mid-afternoon there was a breeze moving the haze out. The striking blood-red layers are due to bands of laterite, a soil type that is rich in iron and aluminum.
